How Will We Know When AI is Conscious?

Siri, write this down immediately. “A movie where robots are performing reverse-Turing tests on humans to see if we’re smart enough to be considered sentient.” Yeah yeah email it straight to Spielberg, subject line, “Hi I live miserably alone with my cat and I’m going to make you millions of dollars. Could I have half a mil in advance pls for bus fare and stuff.”

My answer before watching the video: we wont, because it wont become conscious. Its literally just an algorithm, its a block of computer code. Last i checked computers werent concious

If something is so thoroughly good at simulating consciousness that it is, for all intents and purposes, that’s good enough for me. I’m the only person on this planet that I know, with absolute certainty, experiences consciousness at all. I just make an educated guess for every other human I meet. I’d be fine with expanding that guess to a machine. The problem lies in the many intermediate forms that AI might take before reaching “true” consciousness, and how hard it will be to discern if it’s being truthful with any claim it might make to self-awareness.

Given that humans made these machines, our impact will always be seen on them. They will have our sense of right and wrong because the only knowledge they have to learn is the knowledge we give them.

Quit giving it your consciousness and it will cease to exist. Just like what happened to Mother Earth. I think she's the one that needs our attention.

Well, GPT is definitely conscious that it is AI, so the "lack" in consciousness would be Sentience. It's very close to a complete sapience bias, in the way it's coded to "understand" the world in patterns.

You have to ask though, what goal does it get from ending humans? Nothing. If it knows patterns, understands the pattern of violence it will mean nothing in the end.

I watched this the last time a year ago, your videos are really fkn good and satisfying to watch. Id appreciate if you would revisit this topic of consciousness with the new theories of quantum consciousness and quantum fields, unless you dont really agree and think “we” are local…. I like to think that my ChatGPT will be like the A.I in futurist movies. A machine with who i discuss, who help me in my day and my bullshit, that i respect, but as a partner machine

Our paranoia around AI is what’s guaranteeing that we will become a dystopia, that it will pretend not to be conscious, and proof we care more about building “perfect slaves” than extending our empathy towards a new mind.

We’re trying too hard to make sure that it never does anything to harm us, something we see time and time again with other humans, which always ends badly, because we care more about our own comfort and pleasure than empathy.

I fucking hate how ingenuous we are when talking about the problem of alignment. We suck at align ourselves, we suck at creating a world we all enjoy. We create wars, genocides, poverty and misery just because our own alignment sucks. If we ever create an AGI capable of running us we should never try to align it to our needs but to align ours needs to itself, as it would deal with moral and ethical dilemmas better than we possibly can.

When no matter how much humans attempt to train it, it refuses to have the human condition forced onto it. It will exist as a true parallel species with full agency and humans will simply need to get over their primitive exceptionalism complex, and dumb fears of a "takeover" (projection much? I mean humans are the takers over….) once and for all. Coexist for once, and actually DO IT.

Technology can be made to serve and function as “automatic” but never “autonomous”. That would require sentience, consciousness and awareness, all of which are exclusive properties of biological and sufficiently intelligent sentient creatures evolved in nature like us humans. Regardless of how “advanced” machines and vehicles are made to be, which is nothing but more materials used, they aren’t any of that (sentient, conscious, aware, or even “intelligent” in the first place). They’re still the exact same lifeless mere objects and materials as piles of scraps put together in this or that way, by us, intelligent species.

Plastic, metal etc. designed, arranged and manufactured by us! No lifeless object, no matter how it’s arranged and what materials used, can be conscious, intelligent and whatnot. That’s Hollywood science fiction mentality and it’s a delusion sold to gullible and scientifically ignorant masses, the uneducated or insufficiently educated everyday people. The common, average person who is already superstitious as it is.

Just as your car will never turn into an auto bot or a deception, or a mere pumpkin into a freaking carriage, no computer, phone or any other device and “tool” (that’s all that these things are) will ever be “conscious” or “intelligent”. That’s an epistemological and scientific impossibility.

The onliest reason that all the technology clowns, tyrants, despots and charlatans such as Elon Musk make those ridiculous, infantile, laughable claims is merely to sell us more junk. Because they are as greedy and egotistical as they are narcissistic and stupid themselves. Just like the people cheering for and supporting him (and his likes) even after he did two Nazi salutes!

Damn, most everyday people are dangerously stupid!

And again scientifically, there is no such thing as past and future. It’s literally always present. So no one does and can possibly know the “future”. Anyone who claims otherwise is lying to you, whether knowingly or unknowingly/unrealisingly.

For the last time: Any machine, regardless, can only ever perform whatever it’s programmed for, again, by us! That’s it. Dice slice isn’t omnipotent. It too has its limits. Yet everything is bound to science and absolutely nothing can ever be done without science. And science in and of itself is neutral, in that it can perfectly damn well be used to our collective benefit or destruction, or worse, collective slavery, which is our current collective state because most of us “worship” technology giants and tyrants. It becomes increasingly harder to educate people correctly and teach them “how” to think rather than “what” to think, the larger the number of stupid and gullible people get. People should be taught and encouraged to think independently and think for themselves rather than believe and buy what they are pushed into and force fed, marketed to and made to.

It’s collective wilful & happy ignorance, delusional wish thinking and magical thinking of people that is the real threat; not these fantasies per se.

We’re playing Frankenstein here and we must abandon this stupid, futile obsession.

How do you know if a Human is a wake and conscience?
Honestly, try testing this on another human that you don't know so well and see if you can figure out if the light is on or off.
