Jai alai is a fast-paced sport that originated in the Basque region of Spain and is played with a curved basket called a cesta and a hard rubber ball known as a pelota. The game is played on a three-walled court called a fronton, and the objective is to hurl the ball against the front wall in such a way that the opponent cannot return it. Players use the cesta, strapped to their arm, to catch the ball after it rebounds off the wall and then sling it back in one fluid motion. The ball must be caught and returned in one continuous movement without holding or juggling. Jai alai can be played in singles or doubles, and the game is typically played to a set number of points, often seven or nine. Points are scored when the opposing player or team fails to catch or return the ball within bounds. The ball can reach speeds over 150 mph, making reflexes and precision crucial. Due to the speed and intensity of the game, helmets and protective gear are worn. Jai alai is known for its unique blend of hand-eye coordination, agility, and speed, making it one of the most thrilling sports to watch and play.
