This directly overturned the Supreme Court's infamous Dred Scott v. Sandford decision of 1857, which had denied citizenship to people of African descent, whether enslaved or free. So, rather than being designed to keep people enslaved, the 14th Amendment's birthright citizenship provision was a crucial step during the Reconstruction era to ensure the newly freed population was recognized as full citizens with associated rights.
